BubbleConf 2013 Recap (Director’s Cut)
BubbleConf is a conference on tech, design and entrepreneurship by Nedap and Phusion. It is targetted towards startups and the 2013 edition was held in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on September 27th. It had close to 400 people from all over the world attend and we were blown away once again by the positive energy we received from the crowd.
We can’t even describe how much it meant for us to have you all come out to our venue that day: you folks really were the icing on the cake for us in working on this conference for the past 8 months or so. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and we couldn’t be happier to have shared a day filled with inspiration with all of you.
But all good things have to come to an end, and in wrapping up BubbleConf 2013, we’d like to list the photos, videos and reviews that were taken on that day.
Videos
The guys over at TayloredTales did an amazing job at capturing the day itself. The first video should give you an idea of what BubbleConf 2013 was like from an attendee’s point of view.
The videos of the talks themselves that were held in the main room will be put up shortly as well. Please stay tuned, you really don’t want to miss out any of them!

Stay Classy Amsterdam!
BubbleConf was born out of the desire to have a conference that would cater to startups in a multifaceted way by covering the topics we felt were most important for tech startups: tech, design and entrepreneurship. By putting these topics in wedlock, we had hoped to be able to bring together as many people from different fields to come share their war stories with one another. And possibly even form new startups. We felt there were so many diamonds in the rough in the Netherlands that really deserved a spot in the limelight: they would be able to do amazing things when given the right opportunities.
We’re incredibly excited to see that we have at least been able to accomplish a few of those goals that we set out to achieve when looking back at BubbleConf. We really hope our attendees will continue working on their projects and work towards putting the Netherlands/Europe on the startup map. We will certainly continue to do so with our own startup Phusion 😉
As for a 2014 edition of BubbleConf, that might be a bit too early to think about at this point: everyone involved from Nedap and Phusion are still recovering from the 8 months or so of time they put into organizing BubbleConf 2013. Regardless of whether or not there will be a 2014 edition, we hope you have enjoyed BubbleConf 2012 and 2013: we certainly did!

With only about 4 weeks left until BubbleConf takes place, it’s time to announce the final speaker of our already amazing lineup! This week, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be having David Noël over from SoundCloud.
SoundCloud, launched in 2008 is the leading audio platform that gives users unprecedented access to the world’s largest community of music and audio creators. David played an instrumental part in the growth of SoundCloud and that’s also going to be the topic of his talk: Growth.
Growth is a dynamic moment in a start-up’s lifecycle that seems to never stop once it starts. First million users? Check. Constant flow of new team members? Check. Downtimes? Check. Culture? Check. Going global? Check. This session will explore the untold stories about growth at SoundCloud – ranging from product to community to the company. It will explore the delicate balance of implementing structure in a startup without losing the core motivations that initially propelled SoundCloud to become the world’s leading audio platform to iterating on our products while listening to the feedback from our community of creators to ensuring every new employee feels welcomed and aligned across multiple timezones.
David Noël
David Noël is the Vice President Community of SoundCloud, the leading audio platform that enables anyone, anywhere to create and share their sounds on the web.
Since joining the company as its sixth team member in May 2009, David has played an integral role in growing its community of engaged users. Leading a global Community team of almost thirty, his responsibilities lie at the intersections where users meet and interact with SoundCloud and its community. As the company’s Evangelist, David is SoundCloud’s external voice, its users’ internal advocate, and currently supports the setup of SoundCloud’s NYC office.
Prior to joining SoundCloud, David co-founded a web entertainment startup and has a background in marketing and the music industry, where he worked as an A&R and tour manager.
David is a Seedcamp mentor and is passionate about all things tech, start-ups, airplanes. He was named Best Startup Mentor/Advisor of the year at TechCrunch Europe’s The Europas in 2011 and was awarded SXSW Interactive’s Best Community Award in 2013.

This week, we’re super excited to announce that we’ll be having someone awesome from Facebook in the house again. This year, Jackson Gabbard will walk you through a day in the life of a coder at Facebook. And not just any coder, but a coder working on the infrastructure that makes Facebook available to over a billion users.
This talk differs from last year’s talk by Philip Su* in that it will focus a bit more on the technical nitty gritty of being an infrastructure coder at Facebook, while trying to touch upon what it’s like to work as a coder at Facebook.
Building a complex, multiplatform product like Facebook requires supporting systems that can scale to serve more than a billion people. Getting the most value out of every piece of infrastructure we build is one of the ways Facebook has managed to stay tiny compared to the number of people who use our services. Given that, it may be surprising to learn that the way we decide what tools and infrastructure to build is very organic, often driven by just a single person’s vision. This talk will make you an infrastructure coder at Facebook for a day and give you a chance to see how the women and men who make Facebook make Facebook.
Jackson Gabbard
Originally a member of the infrastructure team, Jackson has worked on Facebook for the mobile web, Facebook core JS libraries, the user interface engineering team, and the internal tools team. He helped build the first versions of Timeline for mobile devices and the mobile version of the Facebook App Center. Now living in the UK, he’s helping bootstrap the London engineering team.

Apple Design Award Winner Pieter Omvlee of Bohemian Coding to speak at BubbleConf 2013
BubbleConf is a conference for today’s tech startups on design, development and entrepreneurship by Nedap and Phusion. We aim to bring together developers, designers and entrepreneurs from all over Europe to share their knowledge and war stories with one another. With about 400 attendees last year, we hope to see you at this year’s edition in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on September 27th!

This week, we have yet another Apple Design Award winner to announce as a speaker at BubbleConf! Like last time, this speaker has won multiple Apple Design Awards for their deep understanding of combining engineering with design. We’re of course talking about the one and only Pieter Omvlee of Bohemian Coding.
Pieter and his company are out on a bootstrapped mission to take down some giants in this industry. To that end, he has developed the Apple Design Award winning application Sketch, which has already garnered much praise from some of the largest companies in the industry, some even going as far as calling it the one and only Photoshop contender.
Pieter’s talk will be about how they built Sketch at Bohemian Coding, and how they did it carefully and slowly. He’ll discuss building products in general, and how he ended up getting recognition and was suddenly trying to go up against Adobe. Related to that, he’ll have a look at music and design and try to get to grips with the fact that he’s just not good at doing certain things (according to himself). He hopes to show you that there are no magic tricks, and that it’s a matter of working hard and not taking yourself too seriously: this alone can get you a long way.
Pieter Omvlee
Pieter is the founder of Bohemian Coding where he mainly works on their Apple Design Award winning app ‘Sketch‘. Most of his day-to-day activities still involve programming, but has a keen interest in design and a reluctant involvement in the more business-y aspects of running a company. In the little spare time he has he likes to play (Classical) piano and rant about all that’s wrong in our little ecosystem.

Lightning Talk Call for Proposals – BubbleConf 2013
BubbleConf is a conference for today’s tech startups on design, development and entrepreneurship by Nedap and Phusion. With about 400 attendees last year, we hope to see you at this year’s edition in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on September 27th!
Your Story
By the time of this writing, BubbleConf has already unveiled a large part of its cherrypicked speaker line up. They will talk about technology, design and entrepreneurship and are responsible for some of the most popular sites and products currently available.
Those are not the only stories we want to hear and share though: we want your stories as well.
In Search of Lightning Talk Speakers
In addition to the speaker slots that we’ve filled so far, we’re making a number of short time-slots available for lightning talks. A lightning talk lasts for no more than 10 minutes and this includes setup & teardown time. We currently have room for 4 lightning talks.
Giving a lightning talk will provide you with an excellent opportunity to make your startup idea known to the world. Your talk can be about development, design or anything else, but at least it should contain your ideas on entrepreneurship. In order to be considered for one of these lightning talk slots, we would highly encourage you to submit a proposal. And to do so in a timely manner as we are expecting to close the lightning talk CFP on september 7th 2013. Again, there are only 4 slots available, so don’t miss out.
Submit your proposal
Please submit your lightning talk proposal to info@bubbleconf.com, with the following information:
- A short introduction of yourself.
- A picture of yourself.
- The title of your talk.
- A small abstract of your talk. It should be no more than 3 sentences.
This information will be used for the BubbleConf lightning talk speaker announcements should your talk be selected.
Format of your lightning talk
In order to help you deliver your talk in a timely manner, we maintain the Pecha Kucha style. Please make sure that you adapt your talk to this style.
On behalf of the BubbleConf team, we look forward on reviewing your lighting talk proposals.

Apple Design Award Winners Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk of Sofa and Facebook fame to Speak at BubbleConf 2013
BubbleConf is a conference for today’s tech startups on design, development and entrepreneurship by Nedap and Phusion. We aim to bring together developers, designers and entrepreneurs from all over Europe to share their knowledge and war stories with one another. This week, we’re super excited to announce that our friends Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk will be speaking at BubbleConf 2013. On an editorial note, we quite frankly don’t actually even know where to start when describing these guys: they have so many accolades attached to their names, that we’d probably do them injustice by leaving a few out for brevity’s sake.
Jorn van Dijk(L) and Koen Bok(R)

Jorn van Dijk (L) and Koen Bok (R)
Koen Bok was one of the co-founders of Sofa, a software company known for its keen eye for design. Sofa has won numerous Apple Design Awards for their in-house products, such as Checkout and Versions. They’ve also had the pleasure of working for numerous high end clients such as Mozilla, Tom Tom and Nike. Chances are likely that you’ve already seen and interfaced with some of their work without probably even realizing it!
Jorn van Dijk was Sofa’s art director and is known for creating some of the most gorgeous app icons and interfaces you’ve probably ever seen. It was actually one of his icons (the Cappuccino project icon) that made us contact Sofa to learn more about them.
Even to this day, I distinctly remember calling Koen on the phone in 2009 and him welcoming us to Sofa’s office to have coffee and talk shop. We felt so welcomed that Hongli and I even brought cake with us and well, the rest was history: their culture strongly resonated with what we wanted to get out of Phusion one day that we hit it off right from the get go. They were and are basically an inspiration to companies such as ours: they were crazy enough to do a startup from this tiny speck on the planet called the Netherlands with almost a YOLO mentality by reaching for the stars and loving every minute of it.
Sofa was acquired about 2 years ago by Facebook, and during their time at Facebook they’ve worked on apps such as Facebook for iOS/Android, Messenger for iOS/Android/web and Camera for iOS. As before, chances are very likely that you’ve already seen and interfaced with their work.
Even though we were happy to see Sofa get acquired by Facebook, we were also somewhat sad to see an awesome company like that leave the Netherlands. We would miss them indeed but stayed in touch with one another through the internet.
About a week ago however, we learnt that they had left Facebook and would be returning home to Amsterdam. With them speaking at BubbleConf, we hope you’ll be able to help us give them a warm and fitting welcome home party by attending! We’re confident they’ve got some pretty cool stories to share as well 🙂

Being active supporters of the Rails community ourselves, we’re super excited to have RailsGirls‘ Pia Henrietta Kekäläinen and Floor Drees share the stage at BubbleConf. They’ll be talking about their efforts into getting more women interested in tech via their code workshops all around the world.
Pia Henrietta Kekäläinen
Pia Henrietta Kekäläinen is an enthusiastic wonderer who can’t stay still. She launched Pioneers Festival to success in it’s first year, played a crucial role in taking Rails Girls to the global community it is today, received the Ruby Hero award on behalf of Rails Girls, has built the startup ecosystems in both Vienna and Helsinki and founded mehackit for kids. Her background is in business, gastronomy and diplomacy, she’s lived in a handful of places, she is an alumni of the exponential Singularity University GSP13 and is on a mission to save the world. She also enjoys soaking into Zen, yoga, climbing, running, sailing, anything outdoors and wine with friends.
Floor Drees
Floor moved from Rotterdam to Vienna almost two years ago. After working as a community manager for over 5 years she missed ‘making stuff’. She started learning Rails and Ruby in August last year and is now confident with CSS and Rails (and PHP). Nowadays she organises Rails Girls events, works as a tech reporter for inventures.eu and a developer evangelist at usersnap.com AND is the co-organizer of vienna.rb, the Ruby user group in Vienna. She’s interested in anything that touches education, teaching programming to beginners, getting more women in tech and generally the startup sphere. She blogs a lot too.
